Struggling w/ impulsiveness

Hi All, I'm struggling with impulsiveness. Ive always been impulsive. I have adhd and take meds, but it doesn't help with impulsiveness. Not sure if anyone can relate, but any pointers to train myself to control it more would be appreciated. I go through fazes of different things. Lately it has been impulsive spending. I just spend to spend. It gives me brief satisfaction and is becoming a problem...

@jared65706 Right! Lol here's the fun stuff. The issues that arise aaaafter we've secured some sober time. I digress. Just saying that I hear you.

Lol. My therapist says and I quote "Its the lesser of two evils, SO LETS NOT WORRY ABOUT THAT JUST YET...thank you for coming Jared, same time next week? Oh and we went over 5 minutes, that will be $250 please."

Smh

Would you be less of a spender with cash? I know some who are better financially because they use cash. They’re less likely to use cash than swipe their debit or credit card. Maybe that’ll work for you, too.

I will try it, thx

All addicts have this problem to differing degrees. The core problem is the compulsion, the need to fill some sort of hole in your heart/mind/soul/whatever you call it. I've gained a lot of control from dopamine detoxes and controlled suffering. Cold showers, leaving my phone when I go places, telling myself no. When I don't want to spend money I just bring as much as I absolutely need. That's what's great about cash.

Well buddy I make a list and stick to it at the grocery store and other stores training you to control your spending i was bad to and planning what and where you are going

Thanks all, so here's and update. I've started using cash only. Literally locked my debitcard in my safe in a storage unit. I asked my wife to pay the bills and get the groceries. Ive Literally only been getting gas money and lunch money for the last couple of weeks. Here is my example of improvement. July only i spent just over $13,000, August $5000, September so far $1265. Thanks for the tips guys.

I have addiction and meditate. My son has ADHD and hates his meds, honest to GOD on everything I have meditation helps. We do 5 minutes 3-4 times a week.

The trick is to do it when you're calm so when impulse comes you have trained your brain to be able to stop for even just a second.

Thank you Tammy. I'll try this. My son is 8 and also has adhd. How old is your son?

He is 11. I made a mistake of thinking he would be still for 5 minutes..🀦 for a while he would fidget for the full 5 minutes, but it has gotten less and less. Lots of patience and practice.

We have been doing it for about 6 months and there are some days he still fidgets the whole time.
