PTSD Challenge

An acquaintance has severe PTSD. He uses. As a result his ex-wife doesn't allow him to see their daughter. That drives him to use more frequent. How can I help him?

I'm sorry Amanda. I really don't know- is this something the VA can help with?

Well that’s REALLY hard. I think the shame & guilt of not being able to see his child is probably something he has to come to terms with on his own without coping with drugs. For me none of my friends or family members could convince me to get sober, I had to hit a compete rock bottom and have that experience myself before I was able to ask for help. i had consequences of a long term institution in my future, I dont have children or anything like that but for me that was enough to finally give up. Maybe you can suggest he go to treatment or a 12 step group but I had to find it on my own. Al anon is great if you want to look up their suggestions I just know from the perspective of an addict I didn’t want to listen to anyone else.
