Just signed up. I drink out of habit. I’m ok

Just signed up. I drink out of habit. I’m ok if I don’t drink, but once I start, I drink slowly but can’t stop until bed. 5-9 glasses of wine is not uncommon. I am embarrassed because most people don’t know I drink as much as I do. I recognize this as a red flag...but how do I get through an evening without my wine glass?

You made me laugh.
If you are okay when you don't drink what's the point of drinking? You say that you drink out of habit. That's pretty much why problem drinkers drink. It's a habit that we have gotten into and come to rely on and now we can't stop. If you think that you have a problem with alcohol then your first course of action should be to contact the AA 24-hour hotline and talk with someone. You can start going to some meetings for 90 days and determine whether you think you are one of us or not. I drank everyday because I liked what it did to me.

Here's a snippet from the big book of AA in the Doctor's Opinion.

“Men and women drink essentially because they like the effect produced by alcohol. The sensation is so elusive that, while they admit it is injurious, they cannot after a time differentiate the true from the false. To them, their alcoholic life seems the only normal one. They are restless, irritable and discontented unless they can again experience the sense of ease and comfort which comes at once by taking a few drinks—drinks which they see others taking with impunity. After they have succumbed to the desire again, as so many do, and the phenomenon of craving develops, they pass through the well-known stages of a spree, emerging remorseful, with a firm resolution not to drink again. This is repeated over and over, and unless this person can experience an entire psychic change there is very little hope of his recovery.”
